This paper presents status of development of the iSRE (integrated system for repository engineering) as a design supporting system that enables rational designing of a geological disposal repository. The complimentary technique of construction information modeling/management (CIM) has been employed for the development of iSRE. CIM uses a shared three dimensional (3D) model of associated data through common data models. In this paper, as a design support system that conforms to the characteristics of information management about engineering technology represented by repetition of design during the disposal project period, we examined and designed the function of the "iSRE", constructed a prototype, and confirmed the function through a trial simulating actual work in the disposal project. As a result, with respect to the functions of DB and IF of the iSRE, we got a prospect that these functions can be the foundation of information management on engineering technology, and development of the prototype of the iSRE and its test run extracted issues for practical use of such system.

The contents of this paper are the goal of the development, design requirements and required functions, the basic structure of iSRE. The main databases of the iSRE could then be designed with an interface to coordinate with external systems and other databases. Some of the databases and the interfaces were trialed and a data model was then built. A scenario of iSRE operation was also created and the applicability of iSRE using a data model was also examined. Thanks to the use of the existing software, the development process could be conducted while solving problems for realistic test cases. The prospect of the development of the iSRE for geological disposal projects was realized and the iSRE was confirmed as being a useful tool for designing a repository.

In the loss of forced core cooling test using High Temperature engineering Test Reactor (HTTR), the forced cooling of reactor core is stopped without inserting control rods into the core and cooling by Vessel Cooling System (VCS) to demonstrate the inherent safety of HTGR be secured by natural phenomena to make it possible to design a severe accident free reactor. In the test, the local temperature was supposed to exceed the limit from the viewpoint of long-term use at the uncovered water cooling tube by thermal reflectors in the VCS, although the safety of reactor is kept. The local higher temperature position was specified although the temperature was sufficiently lower than the maximum allowable working temperature, and natural circulation of water had insufficient cooling effect on the temperature of water cooling tube below 1C. Then, a new safe and secured procedure for the loss of forced core cooling test was established, which will be carried out soon after the restart of HTTR.

N-cyclohexyl-2-pyrrolidone (NCP), can selectively precipitate U(VI) ions in aqueous nitric acid solutions. Utilizing this property, we have been developing a simple reprocessing process of spent nuclear fuel based only on precipitation method. In the first precipitation step, only U is separated by precipitation in a yield of about 70%, and in the second precipitation step both U and Pu are recovered and separated from fission products (FP) and other transuranium elements (TRU). In the present study, a precipitator and a precipitate separator were designed and built up, and were tested with aspets of operationability and system performance.

The Fugen Nuclear Power Station (NPS) was shut down permanently in March 2003, and preparatory activities are underway to decommission the Fugen NPS. An engineering system to support the decommissioning is being developed to create a dismantling plan using state-of-the-art software such as 3-dimentional computer aided design (3D-CAD) and virtual reality (VR). In particular, an exposure dose evaluation system using VR has been developed and tested. The total system can be used to quantify radioactive waste, to visualize radioactive inventory, to simulate the dismantling plan, to evaluate workload in radiation environments and to optimize the decommissioning plan. The system will also be useful for educating and training workers and for gaining public acceptance.

The data on worker dose in dismantling of the Japan Power Demonstration Reactor (JPDR) was analyzed to characterize its features. It was appeared from the study that the collective dose to the workers was 306 man-mSv, in which maximum individual dose was 8.5 mSv, almost all doses were received in the activities for dismantling of reactor internals, the reactor pressure vessel and the biological shield, and that the worker dose distribution was similar to that in the maintenanee of the facilities which was characterized by the hybrid log normal distribution model. Farthermore, it was found that the dismantling activities were categorized into three groups depending on dose rates in workplaces, then contribution factors for radiation exposure in terms of dose rates in different groups were derived based on the analysis. The study would be useful for estimation of worker dose in future decommissioning of commercial nuclear power plants in Japan.
